Steve Rogers/Captain America Steve Rogers was born July 4, 1917 in New York City to Irish immigrants. His childhood was fairly uneventful, and he displayed a talent for art. By the early 1940s, he was a tall, scrawny fine arts major who was concerned by the events overseas. He attempted to enlist in the Army and was rejected because of his poor constitution, but he was offered the chance to serve his country by participating in a top secret research project called Operation: Rebirth. The project was successful, and Steve was transformed from a frail student into the perfect soldier. However, the scientist responsible for the Super Soldier formula was killed soon after, and the secret of the serum died with him. Steve was turned into a figure of hope for the American people, a role which he accepted gladly, and he fought the Nazis until 1944. During an operation to stop an experimental drone plane, Steve was thrown into the freezing waters of the North Atlantic and assumed dead. In late 2006, S.H.I.E.L.D., in cooperation with Stark Industries, recovered the body of Steve Rogers frozen in ice. Initially intending to unfreeze him in order to obtain the secret of the super soldier serum, they found instead that he had not been killed, but had been existing in a state of suspended animation. He was nursed back to health - which didn't take long at all - restored to active duty, and placed on S.H.I.E.L.D.'s payroll as the leader of the superhero team The Avengers. As he recovered and adjusted to a new decade, he stayed with Tony Stark and the two of them became close friends. Steve discovered during this time that when he didn't return from the war, his fiancee Gail married his best friend Bucky. He has been to see them since and is happy for them. The three of them have remained close, though it does occasionally still hurt Steve to see that Gail and Bucky have aged. Steve is currently in a very private relationship with Tony Stark and lives with him in Manhattan. He has adjusted to and embraced his new life. As a result of the super soldier serum Steve's strength, endurance, agility, speed, reflexes, and durability are at the highest limits of human potential. He also possesses an extremely heightened endurance and is capable of bench pressing 1100 pounds and running a mile in little more than a minute. He is unable to become drunk, is immune to most diseases, and heals more quickly than normal. He is an expert in combat strategy, survival, military strategy, piloting, and demolitions.
